Motion Capture technology has made significant inroads in Hollywood movies in recent years and lately, the technology has become affordable enough for small studios to adopt. Motion Digital Media Group has its own motion capture facility—the first such commercial facility in Alberta.

The facility allows for the rapid turnaround of character animation, allowing animations completed in a matter of hours that would ordinarily take weeks using traditional keyframing methods. The time savings of using motion capture makes a huge impact to the project’s bottom line.

And because motion capture records live performers, all the subtleties of human motion are transferred to the animation. Animated characters move like real people—because the motion is directly translated from real people.

Specifications

• Optical motion capture system: The motion capture system dresses the performer in a suit with highly reflective markers at key points over his body. Infrared light reflected from the markers is picked up by the cameras arranged around the performance area and then synthesized into 3D data.
• Sample Rate: 100 frames per second.
• Performers: Up to two performers can have their performance captured at this time.
• Capture Area: 8’ x 8’.
• Facial Capture: Is not available at this time.
